How to Repair a Broken Switch in Brass Table Lamps

Nov 5th

A table lamp is a portable light designed to stand on a table or desk and provide light for reading or writing. Although it is an important source of light, it is also a key element in the design for the style of a room. The style of brass table lamps can be anything from antiques to modern. Table lamp switches can break with the constant rotation created when the lamp is turned on from time to time. Instead of throwing out your lamp, replace the switch by replacing the outlet. The change is in fact a part of the socket and a much easier substitute than trying to repair the switch on its own. You can save your lamp and save money by repairing it instead of replacing it.

Remove the lampshade and the lamp bulb. Remove the harp from the brass table lamps by squeezing the sides of the harp towards the socket and lifting it up and out of the harp base. The harp is the part of the light that keeps in the shade. Hold the outer sleeve in your hand, and pull it up and away from the socket. The outer sleeve jacket may require a slight force to pull it up and out. Pull the switch on the inner socket of the socket outlet to access the wiring of the socket switch. Once the wiring is exposed, use a screwdriver to loosen the screws on each side of the inner cavity, and remove the wires from under the screws. Stop using the inner socket.

Install the new switch for the indoor socket. Feel the wires of the brass table lamps. A lamp wire is ribbed or rough. Wrap this wire around the silver screw on the side of the new outlet switch. The remaining wire is soft and wrapped around the copper screw on the opposite side of the power switch. Tighten the two screws to secure the lamp wires securely in place. Slide the outer sleeve back over the inner socket, pushing firmly into place. Replace the lamp harp, bulb and lamp shade.
